Recent events in Australia have highlighted the importance of providing AC and DC power back up during utility mains failure power outages.  This has been highlighted through major international events including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and Cyclone Larry where critical technology failed due to various standards of emergency power back up being supplied.

The ICT industry in establishing Tier standards for data centres has developed standards that offer both providers and clients with a clear understanding of the grade of service being offered.  Similar work in critical infrastructure outside of these data centres has not been established which the Public Safety Grade Power supply aims to identify.  This includes remote and extreme environmental conditions that public safety technology is deployed in meeting the wide and varied response to disaster incidents Australia wide.
